01 · The Fundamentals

What Is Network Attached Storage?

A NAS is a purpose-built storage server that lives on your own network. Every device in your home, office or campus — laptops, phones, CCTV recorders, point-of-sale terminals, design workstations — reads and writes to one central, always-on, RAID-protected pool of storage instead of scattering files across individual hard drives and personal cloud accounts.

Unlike a USB drive, a NAS survives a disk failure without losing a byte. Unlike public cloud storage, there is no monthly per-terabyte rent, no per-user licensing, and no foreign jurisdiction holding your data — your files stay on your premises, under your control, while remaining securely reachable from anywhere in the world.

At Quick Surf Network we treat storage as part of the network, not an accessory to it. Every NAS we deploy sits on its own VLAN, behind your firewall, on a monitored switch port — engineered into the same managed infrastructure we already run for WiFi, surveillance and automation.

How QSN Delivers Storage Done Right

A NAS bought off the shelf and plugged into a router is a liability. A NAS engineered into a managed network is an asset. Our four-stage workflow is the difference.

01

Assess & Size

We audit what you actually store — documents, media libraries, CCTV footage, design files, databases — and how fast it grows. Capacity is sized for 3–5 years ahead, with RAID overhead, snapshot reserve and retention policies calculated, not guessed.

02

Architect

Platform selection (Synology, QNAP, UniFi UNAS or custom TrueNAS), RAID level, network path (1 GbE to 10 GbE), VLAN placement, user permissions, and the 3-2-1 backup chain — all specified in a design document before any hardware is ordered.

03

Deploy & Migrate

Racked, cabled, patched and segmented onto your managed network. Existing data is migrated with verification checksums, user accounts and shared folders mapped, mobile and desktop sync apps rolled out — without disrupting the working day.

04

Manage & Protect

Disk health (SMART), RAID status, capacity trends, firmware patches and backup-job success are monitored continuously. A failing drive is replaced before it fails — under the same responsive support that covers your whole QSN-managed network.

03 · The Business Case

Why It Matters

Storage is the one part of IT where a failure is permanent. Connectivity outages end; deleted data does not come back. Here is what a properly engineered NAS buys you.

Survive Disk Failure

RAID redundancy means a dead hard drive is a maintenance event, not a catastrophe. Hot-swap the disk, the array rebuilds, nobody loses a file — compare that to the external USB drive that takes ten years of photos with it.

Roll Back Ransomware

Immutable snapshots capture your data at points in time. If ransomware encrypts a share or someone deletes a folder, we roll the volume back to ten minutes before it happened — no negotiation, no payment, no data loss.

Stop Renting Your Data

Cloud storage bills scale forever — per user, per terabyte, per month. A NAS is capex you own: typical SMB deployments pay for themselves against cloud subscriptions within 18–30 months, then keep saving every month after.

Retain CCTV Footage

Surveillance is storage-hungry — and in Dubai, SIRA-classified premises must retain footage for 31 days minimum. A correctly sized NAS or NVR tier holds every camera-day you are required to keep, with capacity engineered against resolution, frame rate and camera count.

10 GbE Performance

Local storage at LAN speed beats any internet upload. Video editors scrub 4K timelines directly off the array, CAD teams open hundred-megabyte drawings instantly, and nightly backups finish in minutes — because the data never leaves the building.

Private Cloud, Anywhere

Synology Drive, QNAP Qsync and their peers give you the Dropbox experience on your own hardware — secure remote file access, link sharing, photo backup from every phone in the family or company — reached over VPN or hardened remote portals, never an open port.

04 · When You Need One

When Is A NAS The Right Call?

If any of these sound familiar, centralised storage will pay for itself — usually before the first cloud renewal invoice arrives.

A
Files Scattered EverywhereThe latest version lives on someone's laptop, an email attachment, and three USB sticks. One shared, versioned source of truth ends it.
B
Cloud Bills Keep ClimbingPer-user, per-terabyte subscription costs compound every year. Owned storage converts a forever-rent into a one-time investment.
C
No Real Backup Exists"It's on the computer" is not a backup. Automated 3-2-1 protection runs nightly without anyone having to remember anything.
D
CCTV Retention RequirementsSIRA-classified premises must hold 31 days of footage. Adding cameras or raising resolution without re-sizing storage breaks compliance silently.
E
Large Media & Design Files4K video, RAW photo libraries, CAD and BIM models choke cloud sync. Editing directly off a 10 GbE array is a different working life.
F
Data Residency ConcernsSome businesses simply cannot place client records, contracts or recordings on foreign-hosted infrastructure. On-premises storage keeps data in the UAE, on your hardware.
G
Ransomware WorrySnapshots and offline replication mean an encrypted laptop is an inconvenience, not an extinction event for the company's records.
H
Growing Team, Growing ChaosPermissions, shared folders, joiner/leaver access control — a managed NAS gives a growing organisation structure before the chaos becomes culture.
05 · Tailored Outcomes

Storage By Environment

Capacity, performance and retention look different in a villa, a school, a trading office and a corporate headquarters. Here is what NAS delivers in each of the four environments QSN serves.

Residential

Homes & Villas

  • Family photo & video vault — every phone backs up automatically; memories survive lost and broken devices.
  • Whole-home media server — Plex or Jellyfin streams your library to every TV without a single subscription.
  • Villa CCTV recording — weeks of multi-camera footage retained locally, viewable securely from anywhere.
  • One drive for the household — documents, school work and projects shared across the family with per-person privacy.
  • Quiet, compact, managed — a 2–4 bay unit in the network rack QSN already maintains for your villa.
Education

Schools & Campuses

  • Coursework & media archives — years of student work, lesson recordings and event footage retained and searchable.
  • Department shares with real permissions — staff, faculty and student volumes isolated from each other by design.
  • Campus CCTV retention — multi-building camera estates recorded centrally with compliance-grade retention.
  • Device-lab imaging & backup — restore a classroom of laptops from the array instead of rebuilding them one by one.
  • Budget-cycle friendly — capex hardware with predictable lifespan beats per-student cloud licensing at scale.
Small & Medium Business

SMBs & Retail

  • Company file server without a server room — accounts, contracts, HR and project files on one permissioned share.
  • Automated nightly backup — every workstation and the NAS itself protected on a 3-2-1 chain that runs unattended.
  • POS & ERP data protection — Tally, QuickBooks and Zoho datasets snapshotted against corruption and deletion.
  • Shop & warehouse CCTV — SIRA-compliant retention sized to your camera count, not a guess.
  • Staff turnover safety — leavers lose access in one click; the files were never on their laptop to begin with.
Enterprise

Large Corporations

  • 10 GbE tiered storage — SSD cache for hot data, high-capacity arrays for archives, on a segmented storage VLAN.
  • Site-to-site replication — Dubai HQ replicates to a branch or DR location on schedule, automatically.
  • Departmental quotas & auditing — who stored what, when, and how much — reportable for governance.
  • Virtualisation & iSCSI targets — datastores for VMware / Hyper-V workloads where appropriate.
  • Vendor-neutral architecture — Synology, QNAP, UniFi or custom TrueNAS: the design document is the truth, not the brochure.

06 · Platforms

Platforms We Deploy

We are platform-agnostic by design — the right NAS depends on your capacity, performance, budget and ecosystem, and the design document decides, not brand loyalty.

SynologyDSM ecosystem — Drive, Photos, Hyper Backup, Active Backup for Business. The benchmark for usability in homes and SMBs.
QNAPPerformance-dense hardware, QTS/QuTS hero with ZFS options, strong 10 GbE value, and excellent virtualisation support.
UniFi UNAS / UNVRNative fit for the UniFi networks we deploy — unified management, Protect surveillance retention, one ecosystem.

NAS Solutions FAQ

The questions homes, businesses and schools ask us most about Network Attached Storage.

What is a NAS, and why not just use cloud storage?
A NAS (Network Attached Storage) is a storage server on your own network that every device can read from and write to. Cloud storage rents you capacity forever — per user, per terabyte, per month — on someone else's hardware in someone else's jurisdiction. A NAS is a one-time investment you own: your files stay on your premises, accessible securely from anywhere, with no recurring storage bill. Most deployments pay for themselves against cloud subscriptions within 18–30 months. The two can also work together — many of our clients use a NAS as primary storage with an encrypted cloud copy as the offsite leg of their backup chain. For the full honest comparison, see our NAS vs Cloud Storage guide.
Which NAS brands does QSN deploy?
We deploy Synology, QNAP, UniFi UNAS / UNVR, and custom TrueNAS builds — chosen per project, not by brand loyalty. Synology leads on software usability for homes and SMBs, QNAP on performance density and 10 GbE value, UniFi integrates natively with the UniFi networks we already manage, and TrueNAS custom builds cover requirements that off-the-shelf hardware cannot. The sizing and design document decides the platform.
Can a NAS store my CCTV footage for SIRA compliance?
Yes — and this is one of the most common reasons UAE businesses come to us for storage. SIRA-classified premises in Dubai must retain surveillance footage for a minimum of 31 days. We calculate retention capacity from your actual camera count, resolution and frame rate, then size the NAS or NVR tier so compliance holds even as cameras are added. See our SIRA CCTV compliance guide for the full requirements.
What is 3-2-1 backup and do I really need it?
The 3-2-1 rule is the industry standard for data protection: keep 3 copies of your data, on 2 different types of media, with 1 copy offsite. RAID alone is not a backup — it protects against disk failure, not against deletion, ransomware, fire or theft. Every NAS we deploy ships with an automated 3-2-1 chain configured: the working copy on your devices, the NAS as the protected second copy, and a scheduled encrypted replication to an offsite location or cloud target as the third.
How much storage do I need, and what happens when I outgrow it?
We size capacity from what you actually store and how fast it grows — typically planning 3–5 years ahead with RAID overhead and snapshot reserve included. Outgrowing a NAS is a planned event, not a crisis: drives can be swapped for larger ones and the volume expanded, expansion units can be attached, or a second array can be added for tiering. Because we monitor capacity trends continuously, you will hear from us about growth long before the array fills up.
Does QSN manage the NAS after installation?
Yes — managed storage is the point. We monitor disk health (SMART), RAID status, capacity trends, firmware updates and backup-job success continuously, under the same support arrangement that covers your QSN-managed network, with a 4-hour response SLA. A degrading drive is replaced before it fails, a missed backup job is investigated the same day, and security patches are applied on schedule — so the storage simply works, year after year.
