Fibre, 4G, 5G and now 5.5G all promise big numbers, and the numbers are the least useful part of the decision. What actually separates them is consistency, upload capacity, delay, and whether anything can reach you from outside. Here is how to choose properly — and why the fastest advertised plan is not always the right one.

Fibre is a private road. Fixed wireless is a shared one. That single difference explains almost everything else on this page — why fibre is steadier, why wireless varies by the hour, and why the right answer depends on what you actually do online.
01 · The Short Answer

Which One Should You Take?

There is a genuinely simple rule here, and then a set of exceptions worth knowing.

In one line: if fibre is available at your address, take fibre — it is more consistent, has far better upload, lower and steadier delay, and it does not slow down when the neighbourhood gets busy. Fixed wireless on 4G, 5G or 5.5G is the right answer when fibre is not available, when you need connectivity this week rather than next month, when you move often, or as a second line that keeps the business running when the first one fails.

The UAE has two licensed fixed-line operators, e& (Etisalat) and du. Both run government-approved fibre networks covering essentially all developed residential and commercial areas, and both also sell fixed wireless home internet delivered over their mobile networks. Virgin Mobile operates as a mobile virtual network operator, meaning it sells service over another operator's network rather than building its own — which is why its offering is typically contract-light and wireless rather than fibre.

A detail that catches out a lot of buyers: in many UAE buildings the developer has wired the property for one operator only. Before comparing plans at all, check which operator actually serves your exact unit. The best plan from the operator who cannot reach your building is not an option.

02 · The Generations

4G, 5G And 5.5G: What The Names Mean

Including the one piece of marketing worth decoding before you compare anything.

4G / LTE — the dependable floorMature, everywhere, and perfectly adequate for browsing, email, calls and HD video. Delay is higher than 5G and upload is modest, but it works in more places than anything else and rarely surprises you.
5G — much faster, and much more variableLarge capacity increase and noticeably lower delay. The catch is that performance depends heavily on how far you are from the tower and what is between you and it — a window-facing room and an interior room can differ enormously.
5.5G and 5G+ are the same thingBoth are marketing names for 5G-Advanced. e& brands it 5.5G; du brands it 5G+. It is not a new generation but a substantial upgrade to 5G — more antennas per site, better spectrum use, improved uplink and lower latency. If you are comparing the two operators, you are comparing the same underlying technology.
What 5G-Advanced actually improveddu reported peak rates of roughly 5.4 Gbps on its 5G-Advanced network with average rates improved by up to a third, using dual-band active antennas at 3.7 GHz and 2.6 GHz. Peak figures are laboratory conditions; the meaningful gains for a normal user are better performance at the edge of a cell and stronger uplink.
Fibre is not a generation at allIt is glass in the ground, and it improves by changing the equipment at each end rather than by replacing the cable. That is precisely why fibre tiers have climbed from megabits to multiple gigabits on the same physical strand.
None of it matters without coverageA 5.5G plan in a building with weak indoor signal performs worse than 4G with good signal. Coverage at your address beats the generation on the box, every time.

One thing to be clear about, because it is the source of most disappointment: advertised speeds are maximums, not promises. e& states plainly that its quoted average and maximum speeds are achieved via Ethernet cable using operator-supplied equipment — not over WiFi, and not on every device. Any figure you see on a billboard is the ceiling in ideal conditions.

03 · The Real Metrics

Speed Is The Least Useful Number

Four things decide whether a connection feels good. Only one of them appears in the advertising.

Latency and jitter compared between fibre and fixed wireless Fibre delivers a low and steady round-trip delay. Fixed wireless delivers a higher average delay that also varies from moment to moment, which is what causes stutter in calls and games. A speed test reports neither of these well.
Two connections with identical download speeds can feel completely different. The one with steady delay feels instant. The one that wanders feels laggy, drops words out of calls, and rubber-bands in games — even though the speed test says they are the same.
The Four That Matter

What To Actually Compare

  • Latency — how long a round trip takes. Fibre is typically a few milliseconds to local servers; wireless is higher and depends on the tower.
  • Jitter — how much that delay varies. This is what you feel as stutter, and it is where fibre wins most clearly.
  • Upload — fibre is often close to symmetrical; wireless upload is usually a small fraction of its download. Video calls, cloud backup and camera streams all depend on upload.
  • Consistency under load — what happens at 9pm when the whole building is streaming. Fibre barely notices; a shared cell certainly does.
The Hidden One

Can Anything Reach You?

  • Fixed wireless almost always shares a public address. Mobile networks place many customers behind one public IPv4 address, so there is no unique door pointing at your building.
  • What that breaks. Reaching cameras or an NVR from outside, remote desktop, a VPN back to the office, hosting a game server — all become unreliable or impossible.
  • Fibre is not automatically exempt. Consumer fibre may also share addresses. If inbound access matters, ask specifically for a dedicated public IP, and expect it to be a business-grade item.

05 · For Gamers

What Gamers Need (It Is Not Speed)

Competitive play needs almost no bandwidth. It needs the other three things entirely.

An online match uses a remarkably small amount of data — often well under 100 kbps per player. A 1 Gbps plan and a 100 Mbps plan deliver identical gameplay, because bandwidth was never the constraint. What decides whether you win a duel is how quickly and how consistently your input reaches the server. That is latency and jitter, and it is why serious players care about ping and nothing else.

When Fixed Wireless Is The Better Buy

It is not a consolation prize. There are situations where it is simply the correct choice.

  • You need connectivity today — a router arrives and works in hours, not weeks
  • The tenancy is short, or you expect to move; the service moves with you
  • A temporary site, an event, a construction office or a pop-up retail unit
  • As a second line for failover, which is the strongest business case of all

Avoid Wireless When

Where it will disappoint
  • Cameras or an NVR must be reachable from outside the building
  • Staff rely on VPN into the office, or on hosted phone systems all day
  • Large uploads are routine — video production, cloud backup, site photography
  • Competitive gaming matters and consistency cannot be gambled on
  • The indoor signal is weak, which no plan tier can fix

The Business Case: Use Both, Deliberately

For any business where an outage stops billing, bookings or operations, the strongest configuration is not one excellent line. It is fibre as the primary connection and a 5G line as automatic failover — ideally from the other operator, so a fault in one network does not take both down. A firewall with dual-WAN support switches between them automatically, usually before staff notice anything at all.

This is inexpensive relative to what an outage costs, and it is the single change we most often recommend to SMEs. It also converts the fixed wireless weaknesses into non-issues: nobody minds that the backup line has shared addressing and variable jitter, because it only carries traffic for the few hours a year the fibre is down.   • Commitment and exit charges. Fixed-term plans carry an early termination charge, and any subsidised router or TV box is typically recovered on a pro-rata basis on top
  • The promotional price expires. Compare the standard rate after the promotion, not the headline introductory figure
  • Consumer versus business terms. Business plans cost more but can include a dedicated IP and a response commitment; a consumer plan has neither
  • Using your own router. Generally permitted on fibre, but the operator may decline to support faults on equipment it did not supply
  • Fixed wireless is limited-mobility. It is registered to an address, not a fully portable service — check relocation terms before assuming it travels freely

Is fibre always better than 5G?
For a fixed location where it is available, almost always yes — but for reasons that have little to do with headline speed. Fibre gives you a dedicated path into the building rather than a share of a cell tower, so performance stays consistent when the neighbourhood gets busy in the evening. It has much lower and far steadier delay, which is what makes calls and games feel responsive. Its upload capacity is substantially higher, which matters for video calls, cloud backup and camera streams. And it is unaffected by distance to a tower, walls, weather or how many other customers are connected. Fixed wireless on 5G or 5G-Advanced can produce impressive speed test results, sometimes comparable to mid-tier fibre, but the consistency and upload are where the two genuinely diverge.
What is 5.5G, and is it different from 5G+?
They are two marketing names for the same underlying technology, which is properly called 5G-Advanced. e& markets it as 5.5G and du markets it as 5G+. It is not a new generation in the way that 5G succeeded 4G; it is a substantial upgrade to the existing 5G standard, adding more capable antenna arrays, better use of available spectrum, improved uplink performance and lower latency. du reported peak rates of roughly 5.4 Gbps on its 5G-Advanced deployment with average rates improved by up to about a third, using dual-band active antenna units at 3.7 GHz and 2.6 GHz. Why does my speed test look fine when games and calls still lag?
Because a speed test measures how much data you can move, and lag is caused by something a speed test barely reports: jitter. Jitter is the variation in delay from one moment to the next. A connection with a good average delay that swings unpredictably will stutter in calls, drop words, and rubber-band in games, while showing an excellent download figure. This is characteristic of shared wireless connections, where the delay depends on how busy the tower is at that instant. If you want to diagnose it, look for a test that reports ping and jitter separately and run it repeatedly across an evening rather than once. A single good result at three in the afternoon tells you very little about how the connection behaves at nine.
Which is better in the UAE — e& or du?
The most important answer is usually decided for you: many UAE buildings are wired for one operator only, so the practical question is which of them actually serves your exact unit. Check that before comparing anything else, because the best plan from an operator who cannot reach your building is not an option. Where both are genuinely available, the two run comparable fibre networks with similar tier structures reaching multiple gigabits, and both offer fixed wireless home internet over their mobile networks. Differences tend to be in current promotional pricing, in the specific bundle contents such as TV channels and streaming subscriptions, and in coverage quality in your particular area. Virgin Mobile operates as a virtual operator, reselling capacity on another network rather than running its own fibre, which is why its offering is typically wireless and contract-light.
Why can I not reach my cameras when I am on a 5G home connection?
Because mobile networks almost universally place many customers behind a single shared public address, so there is no unique address on the internet pointing at your building for anything to connect back to. Everything works perfectly from inside your own network and fails from outside, no matter what you change on the cameras themselves. The same problem increasingly affects consumer fibre too, so it is not exclusively a wireless issue. If inbound access matters — cameras, an NVR, remote desktop, a VPN back to the office — you need to ask the operator specifically for a dedicated public IP address, which is normally a business-grade item, or use a VPN service that establishes the connection outward from inside the network instead.
Are the advertised speeds real?
They are real maximums under ideal conditions rather than promises of everyday performance. e& states plainly in its own plan terms that quoted average and maximum speeds are achieved via Ethernet cable using operator-supplied equipment — which means not over WiFi, and not simultaneously across every device in the house. On its highest fibre tier, e& notes that the service is delivered over gigabit Ethernet ports and that typical real-world throughput sits below the headline figure. For wireless plans the gap is wider still, because the advertised figure assumes strong signal and an uncongested tower. The practical implication is that if you buy a multi-gigabit tier, your WiFi and your internal cabling become the limiting factor long before the line does.
Should a business run both fibre and 5G?
If an outage stops billing, bookings or operations, then yes, and it is the single change we most often recommend. I have a 1 Gbps plan but my WiFi is slow. What went wrong?
Almost certainly nothing to do with the plan. The speed you buy arrives at a box on your wall, and everything after that point is your own network — the router, its placement, the walls between it and you, and the cabling feeding any additional access points. An operator-supplied router is generally designed to cover a modest area and a limited number of devices, which is entirely adequate for an apartment and rarely adequate for a villa. Buying a faster tier does not extend wireless coverage by a single metre. If the complaint is one weak room, the answer is an access point and a cable to it, not a plan upgrade. This is the difference between what an internet provider sells and what a managed network provider builds.
What should I check before signing a contract?
Five things. First, the commitment period and the early termination charge, remembering that subsidised equipment such as a router or TV box is typically recovered on a pro-rata basis in addition to the basic exit charge. Second, what the price becomes once the promotional period ends, since headline pricing is frequently introductory. Third, whether you need business terms — a consumer plan generally offers no dedicated public IP address and no response-time commitment, both of which matter if the connection carries revenue. Fourth, whether you may use your own router, which is usually permitted on fibre although the operator may decline to support faults on equipment it did not supply. Fifth, for fixed wireless specifically, the relocation terms, since the service is registered to an address and is limited-mobility rather than freely portable.
